Primary Responsibilities Infrastructure & Flood Control: The Corps operates and maintains the Lake Shelbyville Dam to manage water levels and prevent flooding. This includes routine maintenance, managing the dam’s infrastructure, and conducting engineering projects like channel dredging.
Public Recreation Management: The USACE maintains several campgrounds, boat launches, beaches, and the Visitor Center. They are responsible for setting and enforcing regulations (found in Title 36, CFR) for public use, such as safety rules for boaters, campers, and hikers.Environmental & Resource Stewardship:Habitat Management: They work closely with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) on fisheries management, which includes stocking programs and installing underwater fish habitat structures.
